What Is EMS?
Electrical Muscular Stimulation (EMS) is a process through which low-level impulses are used to stimulate muscles, forcing them to contract – conditioning and strengthening them.
EMS mimics the action of the central nervous system, activating muscles using external impulses. The impulses reach deep muscle layers which are hard to activate through conventional training. Your muscles will not tell the difference, but work out much more effectively.
How does EMS work?
Electrical impulses are generated by the Active device unit and delivered through electrodes on the skin fairly close to the muscles you want stimulated.
The impulses resemble the action potential (AP) coming from the central nervous system (CNS) causing the muscles to contract. Electrical muscle stimulation can provide greater contraction as compared to a normal voluntary contraction, up to 30% higher. Thus, more muscles are being strengthened and conditioned, which equates to a more effective training workout.
Studies have shown that even trained and elite athletes, despite their already high level of fitness, are able to significantly enhance their level of strength. Alpha Bodytec products offers a promising alternative to traditional strength training for enhancing the strength parameters and motor abilities.
What’s more, using electronic stimulation in training improves the order of muscle recruitment velocity. Normally, your body would use red fibre (slow twitch) first to do a specified movement, followed by white fibre (fast twitch) when needed. However, with EMS, the order is reversed with the white fibres activating first. This type of “muscle training”is extremely beneficial for all speed, power and strength athletes.
The cliche “time heals all things” is usually the rule of thumb when it comes to rest and recovery post-exercise. However, when it comes to a speedy recovery, EMS methods have been proven to to be effective in accelerating recovery time, and increasing work capacity at a faster rate than previously established methods.
Safety First
The electrical current is low impulse and completely safe. Whilst the sessions can be intense, the actual feeling of the impulses is gentle and non-invasive.
